In most cases, planning permission is not required for roof lanterns, provided:

• They do not protrude more than 150mm above the existing roof plane.
  
• They’re not higher than the highest part of the existing roof.

If you have any concerns, you can obtain ‘permitted development rights’ from a local authority, such as your local council. Once obtained,  you can install a roof lantern without planning permission.

To apply for building regulations approval, you’ll need to submit key information to your local council or a private inspector. This will include:

• Lantern Dimensions (width, length, height).
• Manufacturer Details: Name and contact of the supplier.
• Material Composition: Materials like wood, aluminium or UPVC.
• Glazing Details: Type, thickness, insulation properties and any special coatings such as ‘low-e’.
• Ventilation and Opening Mechanism: How it opens or is ventilated (manual or automated).
• Thermal Performance: Information on U-values, energy ratings or certifications related to energy efficiency  
• Regulation Compliance: Any relevant certifications i.e fire ratings.
